Do you have to be able to play an instrument to study music?

Hi there been studying music tech at college for 3 years and about to go onto uni…To be honest you don’t even need a GCSE let alone the ability to be able to play music to join first diploma in music tech. I don’t however advise if you don’t know anything or not much about music joining uni for msuic tech as they will start talking industry slang for things (they do in the last year of the course at college) and you won’t survive the first few weeks of the course (As they expect you to know quite a bit about music and surrounding topics) as universities look for past achievements I.e. College music diploma’s, music producing expierence, radio presenting skills etc…If your aiming for achieveing a job within the music industry you need at least 2 diploma’s as well as a degree to even get your CV looked at by a record company, film company (for sound engineering) etc…As there are designated music colleges which offer higher qualifications than college and uni let alone! But they cost around £2000-£3000 for a professional 2 year course. Unfortunately it’s such a competitive industry. Hope this has helped you. Message me for any extra info you want. Sam
