How to be STD-free?

HPV is such a common STD. There is no test for men for HPV. They say to practice safe sex, but what about when I’m married? I don’t want to have sex with a condom on. Also, I can’t have sex with a condom if I’m trying to get pregnant. Even if I’m in a long term relationship I don’t want to have to always use a condom. HPV could cause cervical cancer and other problems. That’s a huge price to pay. Cancerous cells is NOT something I want.

So why do doctors say to go get tested to find out if you’re clean? Just because a guy went and got tested and the results came back negative doesn’t mean he’s STD free. That just means he doesn’t have any of the STDs he could get tested for. He could have HPV! The only way he’ll know he has HPV is if he shows signs of it and HPV can stay dormant. I know multiple girls who have cervical cancer from HPV. That’s so scary and sad. Would about herpes too? Just b/c you don’t show signs of it doesn’t mean you don’t have it.

You can get tested for herpes, even if you aren’t showing symptoms. The best way to be STD free is to practice abstinence (which isn’t always practical). Both men and women can be HPV shots, usually done when you’re a teenager (I finished my shots already). I’ve provided a website that has more info.

Humans are particularly bad at estimating risks. We ruminate for hours over the potential risks of vaccinations, pesticide residue on food, radiation from diagnostic X-rays, etc. Automotive travel for most of us is by far the riskiest activity we do but we hop in a car without a second thought. I understand that you don’t want cancer, I don’t either. At the same time I refuse to go through life paralyzed by fear. Sex involves the exchange of body fluids so it can never by 100% safe. The flu normally only kills the young, old, and the frail but this year H1N1 is killing strong, young, and healthy people. Every person you come in contact with could potentially give you a fatal disease. There are people in my area who died of West Nile so every mosquito bite could kill me. Am I going to become a recluse and refuse to talk to anyone or go outside? While it is smart to consider the risks of activities it isn’t smart to become so paralyzed by fear that you can not live life to the fullest.
