How can I tell if I sprained my foot?

I was going down my stairs on my way to work and I slipped on the second to last step. When I landed, I heard something crack and it felt like the bone connected to my pinky toe popped out and back in. I had to go to work, and when I finally got off I took off my shoe and it was swollen and bruising. It’s a light blue right now, but it hurts like crazy to walk on it. Is it a sprain, or did I just dislocate the joint?

Where on your foot? If it’s your ankle try pressing around the area with your hands and if it hurts mildly you might have a mild sprain. If it hurts a lot you might have broken something. If there is a little heat around the area it’s probably just a sprain. If it is really hot then it could be a break. If you are having a lot of swelling or the pain is very strong you should call a doctor. If it’s mild just elevate the foot above your heart and and rest.
