Does smoking affect body building?

i have been working out for long( approx 9 months) however the results are not as i expected. I have improved for sure but not that much!! I think because of my smoking habit! any idea on this? i would really appreciate if any.

Answer #1

Probably depends what you are smoking. The first thing that comes to my mind is it might make you short of breath, holding you back from working out to your full extent of energy.

Answer #2

cigarettes!! no, it doesn’t reduce my stamina or breathing problem. The thing is that i am not satisfied with the overall results.

Answer #3

Smoking affects your overall health. It takes a toll on your lungs and it makes you feel tired.

Answer #4

It all depends on what your smoking and how much your smoking.. most likely yes because you will have less energy and be shorten out of breath just like twiddlemuffin said. It also cause different health problems.

Answer #5

It affects your lungs, It makes it harder to breath.

Answer #6

It affects your Oxygen intake, but this ‘mostly affects cardiovascular exercise. Some people are under the impression that smoking makes them stronger, and there is actually some truth to this, but it is superficial strength caused by the effects of nicotine (which acts as an Acetyl-Choline agonist) on the neuromuscular junctions, allowing for more powerful contractions. This effect eventually dwindles because smoking decreases the amount of Oxygen entering the circulatory system. Breathing is important when you are doing heavy compound movements (e.g., dead-lifts), and the less Oxygen there is in your circulatory system, the less repetitions you will be able to complete without becoming exhausted / light-headed.

In terms of the psychological effects… These are less certain. Smoking involves a lack of discipline, while bodybuilding is a sport of discipline. So it may lead to you approaching bodybuilding less seriously, but I’m not sure that this is an accurate deduction. I would say the worst effects are the physical ones, namely the effect it has on your ability to complete higher repetitions for heavy compound movements. As you should know by now, the more repetitions you can complete, the more muscle-mass you are going to build. If you only do isolation exercises, the effects will be less profound.

Answer #7

In a very short statement-yes. Smoking decreases pass-through of oxygen, which if you did your research you’d know that muscles NEED oxygen because oxygen helps push the blood into them (and surrounding arteries, etc.). In other words, if you go heavy (90-100%+ of 1RM) then you NEED the oxygen to help you contract and breathe, otherwise you would fail.

To add to the lack of oxygen comes the loss of appetite. Smoking causes 30% more heart beats a minute, expending energy levels so that you feel less hungry. You eat less, you weigh less. Also, smokers are generally 20-25% weaker than their counterparts due to lack of oxygen.
