Scared for our relationship

I have been really doubting my relationship with my girlfriend lately…it seems like we’re kind of growing apart. We kind of live 50 miles away from each other, its a long distance relationship. I mean, before, we used to share all the same interests, I play guitar, and she plays drums, and we play together, its awesome, we can start straying away from the song itself and just improvise, and make it our own, but our music interests are starting to slip farther away, shes going more into indie style, kinda like Death Cab For Cutie, and softer rock than what I like, like Hinder, Matchbox 20, and I have been growing into a metalhead, with stuff like Shadows Fall, Metallica(old and new), Iron Maiden, Megadeth and so on so forth. That doesnt seem like a big issue to most, but when I realized this, I started to realize that our personalities are growing away too. She wants to go to a “really nice college”, which I dont have trouble with, because im hoping I can get into a college period, and just close by. I’m not picky with my higher education, and she wants me to “apply myself more” in high school. Again, this also doesnt seem like an issue, but sometimes it scares me how different we are at times.

I think maybe being different can be healthy in a relationship. Couples who are into the exact same things don’t always get along, because they get bored with each other easily. You’ve probably heard the phrase ‘opposites attract’ and most of the time it’s true. Maybe not total complete opposites, but it’s good to be different, because then you can balance each other out, and you can also learn from each other.

I wouldn’t really think much about her change of tastes as affecting your relationship with her, but more of the fact that she lives so far away from you. It’s really hard to maintain a good long distance relationship, especially at our age [15]. We’re still growing up, and we’re going to change a lot. You may not think about this now, but in only 2 or 3 years, you’ll be a completely different person from who you are now.

My advice is to talk to her about how you feel about the relationship. Tell her you’re insecure about the distance, and you feel like you’ve grown apart. If she realizes it too, then you can talk to her. Both of you should be able to decide what you want to do.

Good luck! I hope I helped, and if you have any questions, you know where to find me.
