jodyd, I still think that urine was more useful for lavage than as an antiseptic. Simply having a sterile liquid to rinse out wounds was handy. A high school teacher of mine was a medic in WWII and noted that they were told to wizz in soldiers eyes when they were on the battlefield and an eyewash was needed and nothing else was available. Not the most pleasant treatment but far better than being blinded. While urine may kill certain microbes lots of others thrive in this medium.

Answer #2

Because it’s a mysterious substance that smells like her. She has zero concept of ‘grossness’. :)

Take her out on a lead, when she pees, let her sniff if she’d like to, but then pull her away and give a firm, ‘NO’ when she tries to lick it. And take her away from it. Once the puddle is gone, then she can run around. She won’t get sick, but it is gross, and it’s not a far leap from eating her own feces- so discouraging this type of behavior is a good idea.

Answer #3

Urine has been historically used as an antiseptic. In times of war, when other antiseptics were unavailable, urine, the darker the better, was utilized on open wounds as an antibacterial

Answer #4

Maybe it’s because she’s thirsty. I watched animal planet before and there was a dog that would at it’s poo cause it was hungry. Maybe your dog is thirsty.

Answer #5

joyd, urine is not antiseptic. In healthy animals it is aseptic. Aseptic means that it containss no germs while antiseptic refers to a substance that kills germs. Urine contains lots of things that bacteria will grow quickly but when it leaves the body it should be germ free.

Considering that dogs will sometimes eat their or other dog’s poo the urine seems like a minor issue to me.
