Well, maybe you can do normal, every day activities while in the same room as the dog. For example, if the dog is in the kitchen, you could eat some food and let him/her smell you and get more comfortable with you near it. You could also coax it with some dog treats in a calm, polite voice. I wouldn’t pet the dog right after if it’s really scared, but just let the dog take the treat out of the palm of your hand. After a while, you should be able to pet him/her.

You could also try these websites:

http://www.bichonfriseusa.com/articles/socializationshy.htm (can work for every dog breed) http://www.humaneleague.com/Resources/documents/HLLCShyDogs.pdf http://www.raisingspot.com/behavioral_problems/shy_dog.php

I hope that these websites help in some way, and sorry if I answered the wrong question. (not sure if the dog was afraid of people or just not comfortable in his new home)

Hold her & snuggle up with her… try to warm her up by having her close to you. Make her feel that you are protecting her.

Answer #3

If you just got her, then I can tell you that the reason she is scared, is because she has just been taken away from her mom and her siblings, she’s in a brand new environment and around things and people she has never seen before and she’s terrified, and very confused about what is going on. She doesn’t know you yet! It’s a whole new world for her out there. It’s going to take some time for her to adjust to her new surroundings. What might help a little is in her sleeping area, take a Wind Up Clock and put it where she sleeps, the ticking sound of the clock resembles her mother’s heartbeat, {make sure it’s not an alarm clock you put in there, because if it goes off, it will scare her half to death}, take one of your tee shirts or something that has your scent on it and put it in her bed too, take a soft stuffed teddy bear and put that in too, that resembles the mother and her siblings also, put a really soft blanket in there too, for added security, also get some squeaky toys and chew toys to keep her occupied. Also, let her come to you at first, approaching her or making sudden moves toward her, will also scare her more. When you play with her, get down on the floor, to her level, it won’t be as threatening as standing over her. It will take a while for her to get used to everything, but as time goes by ,she’ll feel more comfortable and adjust more and more each day. Give her tons of love and attention and she’ll be find in no time!
