Our puppy is turning out to be a real mouthy dog.. He used his mouth for EVERYTHING. We have trained him not to bite people which he's being really good at but he just wants to eat everything else around him. We have puppy-proofed the house but if he gets hold of anything he will ravish it and eat it. He loves sticks and I have often caught him eating them- as opposed to just biting/playing with them.
ANY advice on anything to do with puppies would also be greatly appreciated. I know quite a few of you on here have dogs and my only experience with dogs is when my sister got a puppy when I was living at home but that puppy was a Maltese, a small dog, and was a lot different to this dog. We have a Huntaway x Rottie.
As far as sticks go, I wouldn't be too concerned. If you watch a dog actually chew on a stick, you'll notice that it isn't biting off pieces and swallowing them - the dog is gnashing the stick down into soft fibers that are easy to swallow and digest. Of course there's a chance of a dog getting a splinter or a piece of a stick wedged in the roof of its mouth, but that risk is as much as the risk of it choking on its own kibble. Dogs are animals, and no matter how much we domesticate them, they will always retain some of the wild animal instinct that prevents them from making fatal mistakes.
Thanks everyone! I always watch him when he's playing with a stick so I'll know if he's trying to eat shards lol. But yeah just wondering if it was alright for him.... many thankies :P
Extra fiber! lol I think it's probably completely fine, when they start eating plastic that's when you should be worried but mushy chewed up sticks shouldn't hurt him.
My puppy does the same thing. He just devours anything & everything. I think it's fine as long as he isn't swallowing hole pieces.
Yep, my moms dogs had a fetish with wood and sticks, as soon as they seen it, bye bye it would go :-/
Dogs are fine with sticks, I have never heard of a puppy or adult dog choking on a stick ;)
Sticks can get wedged sideways in the roof of their mouth....painful for them....
yeah they can eat anything not edible really with out getting sick or anything
no, puppies cannot eat sticks
