Pregnant Puppy
I have a puppy that went into heat not to long ago at the age of 8 months. We have another male dog, same breed, and we did well keeping them apart until one day when my husband forgot and let them go outside together. We all know what that lead to, yes they were stuck. That was a couple of weeks ago. Her nipples have gotten larger. What are the chances that she’s pregnant and is she at any risk since she’s still a puppy? Thanks
It is ALWAYS dangerous for a dog to be pregnant and if you do not know the signs of trouble there is a huge risk. I understand that these things do happen but since it did, you now need to do things very responsibly to be fair to your dog and any puppies that may come. First is vet visit asap to discuss the situation. You did not state what type of dog it is but the smaller the dog, the higher the risk in pregnancy. Have the vet explain to you how to feed her, exercise her and basically care for her while pregnant. You also need to start finding good homes for the puppies long before they arrive to ensure they have great lives with good families. Did you have these two with hopes of breeding them later? A puppy having puppies…of course she’s at risk…so are the pups…You might as well have the vet in on this early…take her in, have her preg checked…Your vet will then have a “heads up” as to potential trouble in a month or whenever she’s due.
