Can the US police arrest someone after they have crossed the border into Mexico?

They don’t have the jurisdiction, but by international law, the mexican police must turn them over to the american police, unless there is dire curcumstance. (i.e. the outlawing of the death penalty in one contry may mean that any prisoners from a contry where it is not outlawed will be allowed to carry out life sentences in the other contry instead of being faced with the death penalty)

Are you thinking of doing a bit of gun runnin or something….Ya best bet is to run fast…and faster than Mexican Police once there…or have some cash to give(so i have heard).

international extradition is governed by international treaties. We do have an extradition treaty with Mexico but it only covers specific crimes. Mexico can refuse to extradite suspects to the US if they do not believe sufficient evidence exists to show guilt and vice versa. Capital punishment is one consideration. Extradition also occurs at the State level. I can remember a case where Michigan refused to extradite an escaped convict to Kentucky because the sentence he received was considered unreasonable. The convict was sentenced to something like 20 years in prison for possession of pot which the Michigan governor considered cruel and unusual punishment.

The answer is yes. Legal or not is unclear. It depends on how bad they want you, and if they “really want you” the legal loop holes will end up around your neck.
