Pet rats

Do pet rats have diseases and can you catch them if the rat bites you

Answer #1

Possibly.. You Have To Be Very Careful =]]

Answer #2

It depends on if the rat has rabies or a disease I had two rats and they were safe but I fed both of them to my snake.

Answer #3

It is possible but EXTREMELY unlikely. Pet rats, unlike those in the wild, are far less likely to succumb to parasites, flea- or cockroach-borne illness like plague or salmonella, and in fact, because of close contact with humans and their pathogens, they are far more likely to to get sick from you than the other way around.

If pet rats are kept stress-free and are fed a low-fat, nutritious diet, it is unlikely that they will ever contract anything more serious than a staph infection from the occasional infected cut. Assuming you buy your rat from a pet store and don’t trap one off the street, you have absolutely nothing to fear.

Ermical – rats are not born with rabies. It has to be contracted through a vector.
