Throughout the world, animals are slaughtered not to feed the hungry, but to turn their fur coats into expensive clothing, An obvious alternative would be faux fur, which has many positive benefits both for the environment and the humans wearing the clothing. Real fur should be banned, and laws should be passed forbidding its use. When animals are slaughtered unnecessarily, the obvious harmful effects are the death of the animal, the imbalance of the ecosystem if the animals are trapped, and the waste of the animal as a potential food source. In addition, the elimination of the use of real fur would set an important standard for today’s industries. It will set the standard that we will not harm animals for the sake of fashion. We will not hurt animals because we are too vain to care about the pain we cause; we only care about how good we look. The elimination of real fur as a product could eventually lead to the elimination of other practices that harm animals, such as animal testing and the encroaching on animal habitats. By eliminating one practice, we knock over the first domino. Animals cannot speak for themselves. We must do it for them, or one day there will be none left.
