Why do some perennial flowers multiply year after year, and others don't?
I have 3 differant kinds of lillies, I don’t know which kind, but the ones that smell real good don’t multiply, I planted 1 plant 5 yrs ago and there is still only one plant, I have 2 other kinds that don’t smell at all and I planted 1 each of them 5 yrs ago as well and I have like 20 of those kinds now. Anybody know why that is
There are over a hundred different lily species and there are some plants we call liles which actually aren’t in the lilium genus, for example, day lilies. They belong to a genus called hemerocallis, they don’t grow from bulbs, are very common, and spread like crazy. I’m thinking that might be the one you have that’s given you more plants. The common version is the orange roadside “ditch lily” that you see around July and August. They generally don’t have a fragrance.
So you’re just probably dealing with more than one type of plant, and that’s really why they’re behaving differently. Enjoy them all!
Your sweet-scented lily may be an oriental hybrid, like “Stargazer.” The asiatic hybrids are a little smaller, and don’t have much fragrance. Neither spreads fast.
Lilies themselves are slow to spread. Day lilies don’t have much fragrance.

They’re gorgeous, I wouldn’t mind those spreading in my yard. I don’t know what type they are but I can try to find out for you - I’ll post a pic of them on the gardening discussion forum that I go to every day! It might take a few days.
Thx, thrs like 20 of them, I like them to. I have other ones that look better but they haven’t bloomed just yet. I will post a pic when they do. Thx for finding out which ones those r, I appreciate it :-)
