If my parents are getting separated, can i choose what parent i want to live with?

Answer #1

Most likely, since you’re over 16.

Answer #2

because my mom wants me but i dont want to live with her and she says its not my choice

Answer #3

Well, I’m not sure. Maybe if you guys go to court, you can tell the judge you want to live with your father.

Answer #4

You really have no choice, your dad is going to have to fight for your custody in a court, if he doesnt want to do that, then you’ll have to live with her.

Answer #5

Well you can get a social service worker and if you are over 16 and mentally stable then you can chose which parent you want. But also talk it over with your father too. I went through this with my mom dont worry, just fight for what you want and prove why you want to be with your dad as well and give legitimate reasons.

Answer #6

At 16 I think you can choose which parent to live with, or to live alone/ with friends etc. I think the law recognises that a 16 year old as an unwilling resident is not a good idea, but ask a counsellor or social worker, since you need to know for sure.

Answer #7

Yeah at a certain age you can. If not you get to see both perents.

Answer #8

Actually, You can’t really CHOOSE which one. You can say which one you prefer to live with & the judge can take that. But the judge makes the decision. If he thinks that the one you WANT to live with, isn’t capable of taking care of you or w/e then he can make you live with the other. I’ve already been through it and i was over 16..
