Why do parents always bring up their child's past mistakes?

Everytime as a family we go out to eat or just a typical dinner. They always bring up all the bad things i’ve done. And we always end up fighting and hating eachother. I don’t get it??

Answer #1

Ugh, I hate that. I think it’s because they want to you to realize that you aren’t perfect and you shouldn’t act holier then thou. Either that or they are just plain pessimistic.

Answer #2

They think there always right, but they also made mistakes when they were young.

Answer #3

they want to feel better about themselves by makeing their kid look bad. my parents do the exact same thing. well, did. they stop cuz everytime they start, i put duct tape on their mouths. now i take it wherever i go.

Answer #4

Let’s give credit where it’s due here - your question should read “Why do MY parents always bring up MY past mistakes?”.

Not all parents do that … yours seem to have an inclination to want to make you feel guilty. Why don’t you ask them why.

Answer #5

They brought them into world so they should be prepared to look after them until old enough to look after them selves.

Answer #6

As Dr Phil says: ‘The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior’ ..the reason may be: They Care

Answer #7

I always thought it was to remind them of the responsibility and intellect that they broke. Some parents will have their child be reminded by their mistakes. It’s not always good when the child has been doing really well and doesn’t need those stories anymore but it could be good for a child who still makes those mistakes.
