What is your opinion on the government now giving out free cellphones and service to people on welfare and foodstamps?

They have started a new program where people who are on welfare and foodstamps can qualify to recieve a free cellphone and free service…its ridiculous to me. I have no problem with tax dollars going to help people in need with nessacities, but cellphones…..really?

Answer #1

According to me its useless cuz the government already gave them money for other stuff. Plus every year i take a vow of silence to raise money for the kids who die due to lack of food/water. THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD BE GIVING MONEY TO PEOPLE LIKE THAT. Not free services.

Answer #2

Is it a federal or state program? Are there age or health issues that allow eligibility? Interesting…

Answer #3

Im not sure if its state or federal, i just know that its being done in my state. There are no health requirements and the age requirements are the person must be 18 and qualify for welfare or foodstamps.

Answer #4

Its annoying really why do i have to work my a$$ off to get mine and they can sit around and get theirs for free. I can understand if the parent needed it for emergencies but they dont need text they should have to pay for that themselves . A cell phone with text isnt a need in life.

Answer #5

It’s kind of frustrating to hear that. Cell phones are not a necessity. They are making it too comfortable for people to live jobless. They’re getting cash aid, food, cell phone paid, rent paid, ugh.. why bother looking for a job when they have it made?

Answer #6

From the looks of things, alot of programs such as these are going to go bye-bye soon.

Answer #7

All of them are Obama lovers.

Answer #8

I know it makes me so freaking mad what makes them so damn special. i understand single parents need help and thats fine for food and clothes but cell phones? Umm im sorry but they need to pay for that themselves.

Answer #9

Chill Ben, Please…

I would imagine that there as many Dems as Repubs getting benefits…

BTW I thought that there was a “Do not vent, rant, incite hate speech, or other bad behavior” rule on this site…

Answer #10

WOW and soposably states running outta money well atleast az this is beyond stupid

Answer #11

Someone’s got to pay for it. and its not the government for sure, get ready to open your wallets!

Answer #12

That’s ridiculous. It had better be the absolute cheapest cell phones out there. No camera. No blutooth. No TV. No internet. TEXT AND CALL, THAT’S ALL.

Answer #13

It is their just a cell that you can put minutes on and texts on you cant take pics or anything with it

Answer #14

no not even texting, the most popular way to communicate, they barely deserve the phone and calling

Answer #15

I didnt say they did i was just telling her what the phone did

Answer #16

I don’t know. As far as I have heard, most of these programs have people to meet certain requirements BEFORE they are even considered to get them. As an example, I believe one program I read up about offered the cellphones to people who couldn’t afford a land line phone, for emergencies only. The phone usage was very limited, which is fine.

If the people can’t afford a phone, giving them something for emergency cases isn’t exactly a horrible idea. While I can understand we don’t want to give those who abuse the system an extra reason to keep doing so, I don’t see the need to punish those who legitimately need the help. Jobs are very hard to come by right now.

Answer #17

I haven’t heard of this particular program but I do remember programs that would give homeless people a PO Box that looked like an apartment number and a pager (at the time pagers were cheaper than cell phones) so they could fill out job applications and have an address mail could be sent to and a number they could be reached at. It is rather hard to get a job if you have to put “none” on job applications under address and phone number.

Unless I hear otherwise I assume that this is a similar program to help people get back on their feet. If it is a program that helps the unemployed get back on their feet and become productive members of society than I’m all for it.

Answer #18
