Well it certainly won't have helped them, but I don't actually think it is any more likely to account for the deaths of birds in inland areas than it is to account for the deaths of humans in those inland areas.
It may have been reasonable to assume that more birds would be poisoned - especially during the harsh winter conditions when good quality food was less readily available, but to the best of my knowledge, tests for evidence poisoning have given negligible indication that that is the primary cause or even a contributory factor.
