Needing an alternative to cow's milk for my 16 month old

My family is taking a trip overseas in Asia in a few months for 3 weeks. The place we are traveling to is a third world country so the water is not safe to drink, unless boiled and got to watch certain foods we eat there. By the time we go my son will be 16months old and my mother suggested to switch him to some type of powder formula for the duration of our trip. Right now he is drinking cow’s milk but she doesn’t suggest purchasing milk from the stores overseas as they may not be pasteurized or may be milk from another animal. Any suggestions on what kind of powder formula I can give him for that age that will give him the same type of nutritional value as milk??

We live in Indonesia, and as ty pointed out, there are probably the long term milk products that are available in stores unless you are going to a real outback location. Stores here are as modern as those in the States. Australia exports to a great many Southeast Asian/Asian countries,so if possible try to buy Aussie milk products. China also exports, and their milk products have recently been contaminated, and read the label one of their products is marketed as “Dutch Boy”.

If you still intend to switch to powdered there are many baby formula products in the grocery store, Simalac is one that comes to mind. Your pediatrician will also have recommendations.

This is a website you might want to visit for other health info on the country you will be visiting: http://www.who.int/en/

You can get powdered milk at any local grocery store. Something you might want to try over there though, seeing as there it is more common than here, is goats milk. My mom was raised on that. However, at 16 months your son will be old enough for more than just milk. He can have juice, watered down, solid foods, and other things.

Where are you going? I’m from Uganda and we have milk sold in stores that are pasteurized… (it’s the long lasting milk type that’s imported) so unless you’re going to some village somewhere, odds are you’ll be able to find the right milk…
