My dog looks bulimic!

I have a puppy, he is a weinie dog, he is about one…he wil be in july…he has food all day everyday…but he is sooo skinny! He wont gain weight at all! Is this normal? And how can I help him gain weight? He is very very active but you can literaly see all of his ribs and his spine! Should I maybe switch his food?

Answer #1

well im not sure if his parents were skinny becasue I got him from my aunts friend…the lady that had him already had some of his shots done but she has yet to send us his shot record…but yea thx guys…I will take him to the vet!

Answer #2

have your dog checked for worms, if he has them, no matter what you feed him he will stay skinny, also what did the parents look like, sometimes that is an issue, were they skinny too?

Answer #3

I too have a dog like this some dogs are just little like that however you can try to help by getting a fatty enriched food, Or even switch back to puppy food. Purina puppy food is a great one. Also make sure to deworm your dog with perontil this will rule out all worm types. And last but not least get your dog tested for heart worm this can cause them to be skinny. If you tried all that chalk it up as your pup is one of those small dogs like mine. My chawiennie only weighs 5 lbs.

Answer #4

what breed of dog is he? I have a german shepherd who is 1 and she is only just filling out, before she was so skinny people thought we didnt feed her! But otherwise definitely check out when he was last wormed.

Answer #5

you need to take him to the vet. he may have worms.better safe than sorry. we had a dog when I was a kid that was doing the same thing.. eating all the time but losing weight.. he had worms.

Answer #6

Hi I would make sure he is up to date with his worming as this can cause them to loose a lot of weight, if you want to put him on a high calorie diet the best thingf is to mix puppy food with his regular food as puppy food is really high calorie, best of luck

Well a wienie dog at one year, is still pretty much a pup…he’ll be filling out, and therefore will gain a little weight.

If you don’t have him on high quality dogfood, then I would switch to something where at least 2 meat sources are in the first 2 ingredients in the food.

Also, you may be lucky. Dachsunds lean towards obesity…and that is VERY hard on their long backs. Being skinny is far better for dogs than being fat.

If her poop looks fine, no diarreah…no mucous, then her digestive track is ok…she may be highly active too…which as she grows will lessen.
