My dog is overprotective

My dog is a little 5 lb chihuahua and he is very aggressive toward our other dogs. And I cant play with my other dogs with out him attacting them. And the other day my mom picked me up from school and when we walked in to the house he attacted my winer dog and when we were pulling him off of my winer dog he bit me. How do I make him less aggressive??? any help here???

Ditto…ditto…ditto…bcerutti…You can buy Dog Whisperer DVD’s at his web site…without a doubt, in my book…the most wonderful investment I’ve ever made.

You and your Chi are having an “upside-down relationship”…YOU need to be the leader…the alpha…and if you “observe” your dog, you’ll SEE his body language change a split second before he attacks. He’ll stare, he’ll stiffen…giving his leash a jerk BEFORE he goes off, will distract him…but also, he’ll “feel” the discipline he so needs in the pull. You might want to get him a light nylon rope (six feet, or the 1/4” stuff, and a very tiny clasp…(after all, he’s a tiny dog)…and keep it on him in the house…that way you’ll have something grab, when you see him start his “thing”…Keeping the rope on him will be a pain…but give it two weeks, and you’ll be so happy you endured.

Depending on how many dogs you have and how long its been going on and how much you love each one you may have to get rid of the aggressor

Answer #3

Get him neutered.

This will calm him down, make him less possessive AND make sure none of your dogs get pregnant by accident.

How old is your little guy and how long has this been going on?? You may have a case of resource guarding. This is when anything that the dog sees as “valuable” food, bones, toys or in this case you, makes him want to fight to protect what he sees as his rights to have what he considers his. There is a website, if you google NILIF you should get there and it stands for nothing in life is free. They have great tips to help you understand and stop this behavior. Good luck and be persistant!!

Try the Dog Whisperer, Cesar Millan. He has helped me with my lab and husky with being overly protective. I would pull my dogs away by the collar causing them more intense energy and I would shush/pet them to calm them down. That is actually rewarding them for the behavior they are displaying. Getting their attention before they get in the mode, don’t give affection in stressful moment and you yourself must be calm. The first thing to do to increase out come- rid your dog of it’s energy. Take him for a great run so he can focus with calm enegy and not hyper energy. Huge difference, Your dog will love you for it:) Goodluck!!
