If the moon orbited the Earth as fast as the planet rotated, we would say that the moon would be in "geosynchronous" orbit. Lots of manmade satellites are locked in this type of orbit, but the moon is surely not. If it was, and the moon just happened to be locked into orbit over your house every night, to you- it would never appear to move. It'd be there all day, all night. The reason the moon appears different over the course of a month is because that as it revolves around the earth, our planet casts a shadow on it that changes depending on how the moon, sun, and earth line up with each other. since the cycle repeats (roughly) every month, we've been able to see the pattern for hundreds if not thousands of years.
