Also why did he say "The father is greater than I am." And why is he called God's son? Can you be your own son?
It isn't so cut and dried that Jesus actually existed. There are few extra-Biblical references to him and most of these are suspected forgeries. Considering that there are so many similarities between Jesus and the hero/savior figure in earlier religions (Zoroaster, Krishna, Osiris, Baal, Adonis, Hercules, etc) that it is entirely possible that the Jesus figure in Christianity is a composite of similar figures in earlier religions. Some of Jesus' predecessors were born on Dec 25, were born of virgins, healed the sick, cast out demons, were crucified or otherwise sacrificed for our sins, arose from the dead, etc. There is nothing original in the Jesus story; it had all been in religions before Christianity.
If you know all this why did you ask the question? God is beyond our comprehension, we can only understand parts of the many aspects of His nature. Jesus Himself talked about the trinity and He was alive before the 3rd century. What I speak is truth, Im trying to help you understand. Just because things are hard to grasp and things may blow your mind doesnt mean they're not true. I cant believe people like mustard on their fries. Ew. But people do! Thats the truth. Just because I dont like something doesnt make it false. Just because its hard for me to understand doesnt mean its not true. God's a triune God. Thats just how it is, cut and dried.
God is God in 3 persons. He is God the Father, God the Son (Jesus), and God the Holy Spirit. Its mind-boggling but thats the way it is. Jesus came down to earth from His place at the right hand of God and lived on earth. While He was here on earth, He was fully human. He was fully human and fully God. Its trippy. So in His humanness, He had to spend time w God like we do, through prayer and study of the Word and just communication w the Lord, who was also His Father. The triune God is a hard concept to grasp but that's why Jesus is called God's Son. Savvy?
I'm not religious, but Jesus is not God. Jesus was an actual historical person that really did exist. The stories in the bible may not be 100% literal/true, but Jesus was a real person... It's said that Jesus was God's son... But I guess after Jesus died, they kind of became one? Does that make sense? I may be totally wrong because I don't know much about the bible :p
If it is "trippy", "hard to grasp" and "mind-boggling" could it be that it doesn't make sense because it isn't true? Did you know that there were many pre-Christian trinities involving pagan religions and that the concept of the "Christian" trinity was developed in the 3rd and 4th centuries?
