From the launch of Sputnik and the U.S.S.R. testing its first intercontinental ballistic missile, the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) was born. ARPA was the U.S. government’s research agency for all space and strategic missile research. In 1958, NASA was formed, and the activities of ARPA moved away from aeronautics and focused mainly on computer science and information processing. One of ARPA’s goals was to connect mainframe computers at different universities around the country so that they would be able to communicate using a common language and a common protocol. Thus the ARPAnet – the world’s first multiple-site computer network – was created in 1969.

and no the internet was not the way it is now. it was mainly to transfer data.

good answer… just adding a little more

originally designed for military communication in the event of a nuclear attack from the Soviet Union… the problem was that the means of communication (available after an attack) used back then would have failed if one link was destroyed aka (a military installation, that would have sent the message or information to the next installation and so on and so forth) the internet was designed to solve this by connecting “computers” to multiple servers that process and send data. This idea of connecting multiple “computers” to servers to transfer data to multiple “computers” at once, birthed what we call the internet today
