Journalism is considered to be the forth estate. First estate, the politicians, government leaders, second the business and Capital, third, the workers/taxpayers, the forth the press. All are supposed to serve the people. The press is supposed to distribute news to the people and is supposed to be objective. Is it though? The press has become political and for business. Politician leaders use the press to manipulate people to gain votes. Certain views are heard in the press while others are not. I actually answered a similar question and gave an example on how this is done and seen. http://www.funadvice.com/q/effectmediapublic_opinions
I think it has a massive impact, i mean where would we e without the news. When someone writes a piece it can sway the direction of someones opinions, it can change perspective about certain stories and it can be biased at the same time. Without journalism no one would be updated with the current affairs and situations in the world, it isn't just about bringing the news its about presenting it to people so that they can translate it and understand it too.
News and information gets spread faster through journalism, so people have a chance to be informed on what's going on. There are cons to journalism, though, such as inaccurate information. Some journalists don't spend enough time investigating the issue, or they are just biased and give misleading information.
Also, anything on the news goes through something called gate-keeping, which is a term meaning a filter to determine what's newsworthy and what's not. So a lot doesn't get published and only certain stories do.
It contributes to forming and influencing the opinions and viewpoints of the mainstream.
