Depends on where you fly to. In some countries, even a baby will need a passport with a photo. Especially where they had problems with child abductions in the past.
In most European countries, an entry in the parents passport is sufficient for a minor under 16. While they need a personal travel document if they are older or travelling alone. In the US, it might be that you just need your birth certificate.
