How will high altitudes affect my asthma?

So, my boyfriend and I started hiking a few months ago as a hobby and in the next few months we will be going hiking in the Drakensberg (high altitude - about 3100 m above sea level).

I have been there before and noticed that my asthma kicked up the higher we went. I always carry my inhaler(s) with me when I am on a trip.

We are going in April (which is the start of winter) and the weather has been known to be quite cold sometimes.

I was just wondering if anyone knew or could direct me to a complete article (I can’t seem to find exactly what I want on google) as to the effects that high altitudes have on asthma as well as any extra precautions that I should take.

Yeah, high altitudes have been known to have a negative effect, especially with the combination of the cold.

This article wasnt any good? It covers the basics of talk to your doctor about preventative stuff, climbing slowly to make sure you get used to the altitude slowly. If you’ve got a portable nebulizer, I’d take it along just incase.

For me with my asthma I get trigered by a lot of different things and changes in weather and altitudes will triger mine also . I believe it is because when you change altitudes you are going into a area with less air which is causes less air to enter your lungs. Basically what my doctor told me is that the less air you get the harder your lungs work to get oxygen around your body , thus causing your asthma triger to go off.
