How do I tell my parents that I'm moving away with my Boyfriend?

I’m eighteen, going on nineteen this August. My boyfriend is twenty, going on twentyone this May. We’ve known each other for four years now, been together for a year. He has a full scholarship to a college in Santa Fe, New Mexico (we currrently live in San Francisco). And he will be moving there in August. I’ve given this a lot of thought and have decided to move with him.

The problem is, I have no idea how to tell my parents. I have three brothers and I am their only daughter. One of my boyfriend’s brothers already lives in Santa Fe. He has a two bedroom house and he is going to let us stay with him. I’ve saved up a good amount of money and am planning on getting a job there. Any advice on what to tell them?

Best Plan: ring, date, marriage - I don’t know what you could tell them that wouldn’t bring on hurt and disappointment - a lot here will tell you, oh it’s no big deal - it’s a big deal - you’ll be setting an example for your brothers - hope you don’t burn bridges, they’re Family, you need them, they need you.

Rather than “telling” them, tell them that you are “considering moving away with your boyfriend” and that you would like to hear their pros and cons. Then give their views some serious thought for a few days before you tell them your final decision.

Before you tell them sit down and think about any questions or problems they might have with it and think of a good answer. if its “how are you going to afford it?” think of an answer and a solution if its “were not sure we feel comfortable with you two in the same room” try and think of a comprimise…parents are far more likely to go along with something when its obvious that you have put a lot of thought into it
