How do I fix my old computer?

Okay, so I got my laptop for Christmas. My desktop computer has been sitting around since then. It doesn’t work like, at all.

My dad thinks that I should fix it (wipe the hard drive, clear viruses), and then try to sell it (though I won’t get much for it).

My question is: If I wipe the hard drive, will it still work? Like, would I have to reinstall the operating system?

Answer #1

I don’t want to have to reinstall the operating system. But if I wipe the hard drive, will I have to reinstall it?

Answer #2

if it doesnt work at all its noting to do with ram or cpu etc…

it will be the psu (power supply unit) or a busted lead.. could just need a new fuse but I doubt it.

if you format your hard drive (wipe everything off it) then once its booting it will stop with an error ‘cant find operating system to boot’ or summet similar.. so you will need to reinstall a operating system for it to boot again..

Answer #3

If it is not too faulty with its programs running, dont reinstall operating system, just install and update your trusted anti virus to treat your files, it could now run well. And if it is comprised of too many non important programs, go to your control pannel and uninstall some of those you dont want and delete some files you dont want like spread sheets, office files, images, video clips, etc because when the machine is too much loaded, it lowers the speed and the performance as well. Just a tip!

Good luck!

Hello girl, if you have more than one local drives on your computer, ie C or D, you can back up some important files to your primary drive C in most cases, then format/wipe D. This will increase on the space on you computer and perfomance. There after you will need to install good antivirus to heal all you infected files without reinstalling operating system. If its beyond repair, you will be opted to reinstall a new operating system to renew your machine in everything.

If you need any other help, you can forward it to me, if I can help with advice, I will. Thank you.

Answer #5

if you choose to re-install your operating system you will wipe your hard drives clean removing any traces of files or folders that previously remained. it will still work if you set it up correctly (installing a new operating system from scratch is not always easy) look for an online guide then when you get everything organised update the sytem up to the latest updates for safety and security ( windows bring it up to service pack 3 if you dont know how to do this go to the micrsoft website) just make shure its up to date with everything and its comepletley vacant from all other files.

Answer #6

You are right about not getting much money for it. People can buy a new PC for less than $400 this days.
