Keep him off the road by keeping him in the house. Sorry, but you don’t sound like a good pet owner to me. Your family placed your dog in the position of protecting his territory and he ended up biting someone. He should have NEVER been allowed to roam free without the protection of a fence. Part of good pet ownership is knowing the expense and responsibility of taking care of your dog. Do not chain him, that is cruel. I do not think that you should have him put down. I think that you should find him a new permanent home where he will be in a fenced yard and not exposed to the dangers of cars and those that might seek to harm him. He should also be neutered, if he is not already. I also think that the man was probably just reacting to a dog rushing out into the road. He might have been protecting himself. You don’t know. I assume you weren’t there.

Unless your dog is in the house or in a fenced and secure backyard, you need to put him on a leash and keep him on a leash, when he’s outside. You should Not be allowing your dog to run loose. Not only can he bite someone and you can get in serious trouble for that, but he can get hit by a car and seriously injured or killed. It is very irresponsible of you, to be letting him run around loose.

LEASH walk the dog.

Sh*t happens… a frightened person shaking a stick looks “shady” even in the friendliest dog’s eyes. Some of us live in the country, where a “person walking down the road” is a highly rare occurance. A one time incident does not a bad dog owner make…

So…figure out how much it will cost to build a dog run…Steel fence posts and “horse wire”…which comes in rolls and has small squares…It takes labor to install, but it’s not hard to do, just hard work…A roll of wire is about $80, the posts are like $3 - $5 each… The total cost would be dependent on how big an area you want to do.

little story for you, I work at a vet hosptial and A older man would walk to the end of the driveway every day and cross the road to get the mail, (country road) his Lab would always sit and stay at the end of the driveway, except about a year ago when the came into the vet hospital because the Lab crossed the street to go to him and got hit by a car and died. Please know that if you are going to have a pet you are the one that has to proved the safety for this animal and for the people walking the road, it is your job to give the dog direction.
