We have a criminal justice system based on the idea that it is better to let multiple criminals go free than to falsely convict one innocent person. Because of this the standards for proving a case are very high. A jury that is “pretty sure” or “almost positive” someone is guilty must find the defendant innocent. There was a lot of damning evidence in the case but the jury did not believe the prosecution met the standard of “beyond any reasonable doubt” for a 1st degree murder conviction.
