Why is the short form of pounds written as "lbs"?

Answer #1

What do you mean by ‘full form’?

Answer #2

Means full name of l.b.s (we cal it as pound , but there is no alphabet of pound)

Answer #3

Still not sure what you mean… An alphabet of pound? If by full form you mean plural form then technically speaking ‘lbs’ is incorrect. For example, 12 pounds would be shortened to become ‘12lb’ rather than ‘12lbs’. Adding an ‘s’ at the end of ‘lb’ is gramatically incorrect, but nobody really cares about that anyway.

Answer #4

ok thats good!! but.. ok for example we write “kg” in short term of kilogram .. hence here ‘k’ stands for kilo , and ‘g’ stands for gram.. similarly what about “lbs”?

Answer #5

Okay now I’m following you… It’s actually derived from the Latin word ‘libra’. You’re probably aware that the star sign ‘Libra’ is often depicted by a set of scales. This is because libra in Latin referred to a set of scales, and was also used as a unit of measurement if I recall.
