first job, sooo nervous.

Tuesday is the first day im starting my first job. I’m 17 years old. I am so nervous, I’m always thinking about what if I mess up, or what if costumers get frustrated by me if I don’t know something. It is at a local marina, docking boats, helping keep the scenery beautiful & working a canteen ( I’m not too quick when it comes to counting up money in my head ). Like will they have a calculator in there or a till, will they give me a hard time. what if I don’t know something the tourists asks me, what if people there think of me as an amateur other than their co worker, what do I do in my spare time when I have nothing to do, I don’t want to sit alone by myself, I never been so nervous for anything. Can someone tell me stories about their first job or how they felt that might make me feel at least a little bit better. Thanks :)

awww you poor thing. you shouldnt get so stressed out. its like being in school and trying to be the best in your class. and you dont need to do calculations in your head. theres gonna be cashiers, and at the beginning of your job, someones probably going to teach you how to just type the price and amount int he cashier and you just open the register and give the change and reciept. im only 13 and I volunteered to helped out at my uncles store. ended up being better than people who were getting paid. as for the social stuff, try to make a good first impression on your employer and your co-workers. also a very imporant tip, dont ever make yourself look as if your competing to be the manager’s pet. it’ll make your co-workers super-aware of every one of your moves, and you wont really make lots of friends.

im 19 and because of ill health havnt worked yet. I will be just as nervous as you and tend to think negatively. try following some positive mantras the night before and keep telling yourself you can do it, you can mange. No matter what little worries come forward as you say it force the words out of your mouth. this tricks your mind into believeing it a little. Good luck with your new job once you are settled im sure you will have loads of confidence!
