External hard drive set-up

I just bought an external hard drive for my computer, and im having a little bit of a tough time setting it up. I want to transfer all the saved items from my internal hd to the external one, but I want them to be removed from the internal hd. I tried it once, and now I just have 2 copies of everything. also I want to know how I can make my external hd can be set to be used as my default hd. can anybody help me out?

Most external hard drives can NOT be used as a primary drive; store bought external drives are storage devices, though if you REALLY wanted to, you could rig your primary drive to the exterior. Stupid, really, as it’s like putting the engine of a car on the outside. The primary drive is the drive on which your operating system in installed. Externals aren’t meant to be used in the manner which you are attempting; they’re nothing more than super-sized “thumb drives.”

If what you mean to say is, you want it to be the default HD for downloaded files to go to, you can configure this in your browser settings, and the settings of any P2P program you may be using.
