Do you think exotic dancing should be considered an art form?

NY is trying to get out of paying taxes on the exotic clubs there saying that it falls under a tax exempt law sayin its an art form, what do you think

Answer #1

No. Exotic dancing falls under the definition of “entertainment”. It’s not expressive so much as it is a form of amusement, and doesn’t follow the basic systematic rules that define something as “art”.

Answer #2

Who said that art can’t be entertaining? I’ve yet to find anyone who can specifically define what art is. While I appreciate your point that you don’t believe that exotic dancing is a legitimate art form it sounds a lot like those who argued that jazz was not music, abstract works were not art, and that racy books could not be considered literature. Art is subjective and in the eye of the beholder. If we are going to penalize a dancer because their work does not measure up to your standard of art than what is to prevent someone else from deciding that something you like is to be too base to be art?

Answer #3

Exotic dancing Is just entertainment :)

Answer #4

While I respect your opinion, filletofspam, I simply can’t agree with it. Under that broad premise, you may as well state that incest should be a valid and legal form of love between two consenting people, vandalism is an artful expression, and the KKK is simply showing their cultural pride. Yes, art can be entertaining, but that doesn’t mean that all entertainment can be art. You can’t always have shade of grey - sometimes, things need to be black and white, and there are specifics to what is considered “art” and what is considered “entertainment”.

Answer #5

No. But it wouldn’t surprise me if some people arent trying to give it that designation just to try and get a government hand out of money to support it.

Answer #6

Hmm, well, this is tricky because the way it’s used is not as an art form, it’s more entertainment. But you can strip and pole-dance as an art form (tbh you can do anything as an art form, it’s just the appreciating audience that matters). When there are critics and appreciative people judging and studying involved instead of sleazy 46y/o single men, then it will be considered more of an art.

Answer #7

I don’t have a problem with incest so long as it is between consenting adults. In the US anyway the KKK is entitled to exist and believe whatever they want so long as they break no laws. There are always gray (grey in the great white North) areas. Consider adult film star and performance artist Annie sprinkle. She has a BFA in photography and her post adult film actress performances certainly push boundaries but many people find her performances edifying while others would consider them pornographic. I guess I’m saying that when our government starts making value judgement on art is a slippery slope to censorship and oppression. I’d rather rather see a strip club get away with not paying taxes than give the government power to decide what works are worthy art and what are not. I’d rather error on the side of free expression than on the side of control.
