What is a way to ensure your essay flows?

With every paper I write, I always get comments about how I have good information and points but it does not flow. I attempted to improve this but it seems to not be working. Any tips?

um one thing i found to help, is find points more related to one another, for then you can transition from one to the next. or find points the flow, sounds stupid. but they dont need to be exactly related but just when you are done with the one point in like its paragraph, at the end of it, start the transition, lead it into the next point. just make it where it ties into the before point and make sure it can make sense going into the next point. lol idk if that made sense, i am tired so sorry if it didnt.

What you could do is write each paragraph out, then print it (or cut them out if you write it on paper) and try and rearrange them and see which order looks logicaly best. You want to put points in the order where they are relevant and linked to the one above if you can. Once you have sorted out an order, then create a linking sentence at the beginning of each paragraph, that attaches it to the one above. For example, a paragraph could be about the fact wearing school uniform is bad as it makes you feel less individual. You could then link to your next paragraph with ‘However, whilst individulaity is a big issue, especially in today’s culture, group identity and a sense of belonging can be important to, and this is one way in which school uniform could be seen as beneficial’. Then go on to address other points why it is good and explain that point further in depth.

Use lots of conjuntives ‘However’, ‘On the Other hand’, ‘Due to this’ etc. and work on making points relate to each other. Try and structure an essay as an argument if you can. Write all the good points for something and why it is a great idea over a few paragraphs, then link with ‘However, there is always another side to the argument, and the cons can be numerous too’ and then go on to talk about the negatives. Then bring it all together with a conclusion which addresses both sides and gives your personal view.

To make an essay flow you need to plan rather than just write. If you write as you think, then points will not be structured in any order. Write a bullet point list of the things you want to say before you start, and then order these into groups that relate to each other. Each group can be a paragraph. It may help to, in your plan, give each group a little heading, so you can establish clear links and know where you are going when you write your essay. Once you have planned then write it :) Re read it back and maybe ask someone else to as well, and see if you would call your argument and essay clear and well structures. If you go through it properly after, you should see which bits seem random and be able to make them fit better by a little bit of tweaking.

If you still have trouble, ask your teacher exactly what they mean and if they can help you.

Good luck :)
