Are elephants really afraid of mice?

Answer #1

No, it’s just an urban legend. Elephants are the largest land mammal we know, why would they be afraid of tiny mice :)

Answer #2

No,its only a western folk belief (:

Answer #3

Not exactly. This myth probably came about because people observed elephants reacting in surprise at the sight or sound of a mouse, perhaps even avoiding the mouse completely. In reality, unexpected sights and sounds can startle elephants just like they can many other creatures. People probably mistook surprise for fear when seeing elephants react to mice. Also, keep in mind that elephants don’t have that good of eyesight, so a mouse running around its feet might cause some anxiety. Elephants are also considered to be one of the most altruistic animals in the world, so if a mouse does bother an elephant, the elephant will likely avoid it rather than inflict harm on it.

Answer #4

Good answer, for proof that they notice mice, there is a mythbuster episode which proved it. Was really interesting See here: http://funadvice.com/r/14ltskvrap3

Answer #5

That’s exactly what I was watching when I asked this! I just wanted to see if everyone said the same things. Haha.
