Do elements make up atoms?

Answer #1

protons, neutrons, and electrons.

Answer #2

Nope, atoms are the smallest form of matter. A group of atoms makes up a molecule. The molecules then make up a specific element.

Answer #3

so molecules make up elements?

Answer #4

Elements are substances which are made up of the molecules. Like the metal called gold is an element made up of gold atoms. The gas called oxygen is an element made up of oxygen atoms.

Answer #6

If all the atoms are the same in a sample of substance then that sample is an element.

If 2 or more identical atoms are grouped together to form identical molecules (eg groups of paired oxygen atoms forming a normal oxygen “gas”); or even structurally different combinations of identical atoms (e.g. a mixture of carbon C60 and C70 “Fullerenes); or even groups of atoms all having the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons, e.g. hydrogen with deuterium and tritium (two isotopes of hydrogen) …. ….. then the matter is, in each case, in an elemental form.

If two or more different elements are chemically combined to make groups of atoms then you have a chemical compound (e.g. water - formed by a compound of two hydrogen atoms with one oxygen atom = H2O or a compound of Sodium with Chlorine to make common salt = NaCl).

If groups of different atoms exist in close proximity to one another without being chemically combined (because they do not react together chemically, you have a “mixture” of chemical elements

You can also have a mixture of different chemical compounds. I imagine you can figure that out for yourself.

Answer #7

Solids, liquids, gases - all matter - are made up of atoms (or other things, like molecules, that are made from atoms)

ELEMENTS are the kinds of atoms that we can have. Carbon is an element, hydrogen is an element, and so is oxygen. (We can call them by their names, or by their symbols - C for carbon, H for hydrogen, and O for oxygen.) All the elements are listed out in the periodic table. If it’s in the table, it’s an element.

Answer #8

the answer is wrong. elements are the different types of atoms. elements combine to make molecules. ex: H2O (a water molecule) is 2 hydrogen atoms connected to 1 oxygen atom.

Answer #9

I’ve heard “quarkes” are smaller than atoms?
