dog breeds

My dog dies in June and we are getting a new one at the end of August. I either want a very large one, or small. We want it to be calm but protective. Does anybody have any suggestions?

almost any breed just aslong as you give it enough exercise, love, socialization etc, so that its not agressive but protective of the house I.e dont let it become agressive to other dogs, humans etc, when taking out on a walk. you want a gaurd dog not an agressive dog. recomendations would probs be labs or retrievers maybe cross breeds like jdanzastar said =) x
