Is there any way to convince my crush to stop smoking?

I recently found out that he smokes, and he’s not ashamed of it. I’ve tried trying to make him feel guilty about it, I’ve tried telling him the health risks.. how can I persuade him to stop, I don’t want him to throw his life away like that. His parents don’t know, and neither does his best friend..

Answer #1

Forgot to add that he doesn’t smoke very often.. I think possibly between 1-3 cigarettes a day.. but it’s still unhealthy and I would like to possibly persuade him to stop

Answer #2

im struggling with the same damn thing, and no you cant i tried everything, he always answers with “ i’ll quit when im ready to quit”. i showed pictures of bad lungs, i kept sending him there medical reports about smoking, i tried to seduce him away from it, failed failed failed!! i guess he has to do it on his own

Answer #3

It’s HIS life. It’s not your decision to make for him. That’s like someone trying to get you not to eat burgers or something. It’s HIS BODY, HIS CHOICE. Not yours.

If someone did that to me I would most likely punch them square in the jaw. Not cool.

Answer #4

I was going through the same thing with my ex. I told him I wouldn’t kiss him until he stopped smoking. Guess who stopped smoking lol. :P

Answer #5

Do you and he have a group of mutual friends? Do they smoke? If they don’t, organize them to all tell him how disgusting and uncool and unappealing and self-destructive and stupid it is. They can each tell him when they’re with him, or you could all “gang up” on him together. But make sure that you’re not putting him down for it. The point is not to make him feel guilty or ashamed. Make it clear that you all love him and that’s why you care. The message should be that he’s better than that, and that you’ll all be there for him as he struggles with quitting.

Focus on smoking’s detrimental impact on things he cares about, whether that is aspects of his health, grooming, budget, etc.

There’s no guaranty because, as Mira and Connor said, it IS ultimately his decision. But a firm, loving, positively framed, group intervention by his peers who he cares about and respects is probably your best chance of success.

Answer #6

I personally smoke from time to time and ive had girls ive dated tell me not to or to stop. All it will do is annoy him. Just tell him your opinion and let him make his own choice about it.

Answer #7

Tell him over and over again what you think about smoking. If he cares about what you think, he would consider about quitting. And there’s a possibility he will quit, but it might take a while before he does. It worked with someone I know so good luck.

Answer #8

Just tell him he’s killing you faster then himself… It is true.

Answer #9

I’ve tried telling him that..

Answer #10

I’m not going to force him to stop, all I said was I would like to try and persuade him to

Answer #11

We all do things that are bad for us. Lots of things are unhealthy. Leave him alone - wouldn’t you hate it if he nagged you about eating french fries, or wearing too much perfume, or hanging out with people he didn’t like, and honestly, do you know of any smoker who stopped smoking because the people around them kept bugging them to quit? He probably feels cool and grown up. That’s what makes teens start smoking in the first place. There really isn’t much you can do without annoying him or making him feel like you’re nagging him.

Answer #12

An intervention? For smoking 3 cigarettes a day? I could see if was a hero!n addict or an alcoholic.. lol. Right now he’s probably more at risk of getting food poisoning from a fast food outlet or getting struck by lighting, than he is of contracting lung cancer in the next 40 years.

Answer #13

Three a day - for now.

Answer #14

Sorry to say but he just isn’t going to stop for you. It’s his life and just 1 girl isnt going to make him stop

Answer #15

did know you answering surveys can help the economy, believe me try this one http://funadvice.com/r/15if61l33un

Answer #16

How is he? Are you going to kill yourself over it? Or are you going to inhale far far far less smoke than him through passive smoking and somehow die first?

Answer #17

Guess who is now an ex? You!

Answer #18

…Yes, I’m an ex. I’m quite aware of that. :]
