Can civilians legally own guns with silencers in the U.S?

Silencers are legal for civilian ownership in the following states Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri (C&R Required), Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

Wow, well I think there is a mistake, or something because I’m almost positive that if you get caught with a silencer, you’re in big trouble. Gun shops don’t sell them. It’s not legal to make them ect. I have a buddy who is a deputy sherriff, I’ll ask him.

As far as I know they are legal in most states, but you have to have a special permit. I believe you first have to get a concealed weapons permit, then you can try for a “suppressor” permit - or at least I believe that’s how it works in Montana. Also they aren’t really silencers, they are correctly called suppressors. They suppress the sound gun power exploding and the gases being released. They don’t do much for the sonic boom tho, so using super sonic ammo kinda defeats the purpose of a suppressor. So you need to use sub-sonic ammo which can really limit your range.
