Christians Supporting Evolution...

First. let me ask only Christians to answer this question. Non-believers offering their opinions will only ‘muddy up’ the original intent of what I am trying to find out. Quite honestly I can hear the words ‘God doesn’t exist’ from any of the other 1,000 questions already on this website, I thank you for answering ONLY if you are a Christian.

My church recently held a discussion about the theory of evolution. I was stunned by just how many fellow Christians defended evolution and by the ‘heated’ feelings that were generated over the subject.

Christian facts regarding Genesis state…

  1. Man is to be in charge of animals and to be good stewards and keepers of all beasts.

  2. God made mankind special in that he literally ‘breathed’ a spirit into man… Adam (He did not do that for any other animal).

  3. Remember, that adding to or subtracting (or throwing your own thoughts or theories) from the word of God (the Bible) is abominable in God’s eyes.

Anyways, here is my question…

If the Theory of Evolution is correct in Christians’ eyes, then at what point did God say… “alright, you are no longer animal, but are now considered man and thus you will now be granted a spirit?” Remember that we already established that no other animals have a spirit. If evolution is so gradual, over millions and billions of years, at what point did God give us a spirit and soul?

I really want to hear pro-evolution Christians answer this with their take on the subject.

Good question. First of all, we as well as animals have a spirit the spirit of life, therefore we are living beings. The animals do not have a soul. I am not surprised that “the Christians” you spoke about are for evolution. It just tells me that they do not read their Bible with Gods Holy Spirit guiding them. It is sad that a lot of Christians are just as confsed as everyone else. That is why I encourage anyone who is sincere to read the Bible ands ask for the HS to guied you. If you seek it to understand it as it was intended to be understood, then you can put to silence the ignorant comments. I will say we are animalish, but not the way most people think. When we receive God, into our lives He takes away that human, sinful nature. What He does, He does it perfectly. When He created us He gave us a body, the spirit of life, and a soul. When peopl die the spirit of life goes back to the one who gave it. The soul will be judged and the body goes back to the earth. When Jesus comes back it says that we will be changed and we will see Him as He is. So just keep seeking the truth and God will help you speak His truth to whom ever where ever!!!

welll I am trying to tell the op that me as a creation and everyone in my family do not believe in evolution . ok arachnid. So I am a Christian that actually follow the bible and I just go along with scientist because of school but I think their theories are BS.

Answer #3

well we are not from animals. No where in the bible God said that we are no longer animals. We are men and God created us to control all animals so how can we possibly be animals.Having a spirit is the way God sees us in the spiritual world . he doesn’t look upon our bodies but he looks at our spirit .

Feel free to ignore my answer if you wish, though I don’t see why the person giving the answer matters so much as the content of it.

Most Christians believe that Genesis is allegory, and that creation was accomplished through evolution. Some believe God actively guided the process; others believe he merely set the initial conditions and let it run on its own, knowing what the end result would be. People who take a narrow and literal reading of Genesis are in the minority - and both theologians and physical evidence contradict them.

As one small example, the official position of the Catholic church is that God used Evolution to as his tool to accomplish what he wished.

Answer #5

I’m not a believer but I have read a great deal on the subject.

The majority of Christians worldwide do believe in evolution. The Roman Catholic Church which is the largest Christian church in the world accepts evolution as well as most Protestant denominations. In the US where fundamentalism is more common and science education is poor evolution is less accepted.

It comes down to how you view the Bible. If you view the Bible as a literal document than it seems incompatible with the theory of evolution. If you view the Bible story of origins as allegorical than it is no longer incomparable with science.

To most believers there is a kind of dualism. There can be scientific truths and religious truths and the two don’t have to agree because they are answers to different questions.

* Remember, that adding to or subtracting (or throwing your own thoughts or theories) from the word of God (the Bible) is abominable in God’s eyes.

The warning in Revelation not to add or subtract from ‘this book’, refers to the book of Revelation only. At the time Revelation was written, the New Testament did not even exist.

Declaring the Bible to be the word of God, is idolatry.

That said, perfectly reasonable Christians can recognize the Bible for what it is - a compendium of spiritual texts, but not an infallible or complete compendium. People who view the Bible in this way (which includes virtually all Catholics and probably about half of the protestants) tend to have no problem reconciling science with religious faith.

Answer #7

well we are not from animals. No where in the bible God said that we are no longer animals.

That’s not what the OP asked - he asked specifically why Christians believe evolution is accurate, not how a few of them justify not believing it.
