I assume you mean like changing a flat tire. You need: A tire iron, that huge wrench that fits over the 4-5 lugs on the tire A floor jack. Cars usually have a small one in back somewhere, but the bigger ones are easy to use.

  1. Loosen the lugs on the wheel with the tire iron, but don’t remove them yet.
  2. Place the jack under the side of the car. Sometimes there’s a picture on the jack telling you where, but usually anywhere near the side is fine. You might ding the underside a little if you pick a bad spot that’s all.
  3. Crank the jack until you lift the tire off the ground.
  4. Loosen the lugs the rest of the way and remove them.
  5. Remove the wheel.
  6. Put on the replacement wheel.
  7. Put the lugs back on, hand tighten all of them, then lightly tighten all of them with the tire iron.
  8. Fully tighten one lug, then tighten the one across from it (farthest away), then tighten another across from that one (farthest away), etc., until you tighten all the lugs. If you have a torque wrench and your owners manual you can see exactly how tight, but otherwise just get them very tight, but don’t go crazy.
  9. Lower the wheel back to the ground with the jack. All done!

Note: tightening the lugs evenly as described in steps 7-8 is important to make sure the wheel doesn’t get tilted and crooked. That’s what would happen if you fully tightened a lug or two on one side while the the other side is loose. Then it could get stuck that way even when you try to tighten the other side.
