Can a Sunni marry a Shiite?

I know it goes against everything they belive in, but could it technically be possible if they kept it a secret?

I need to know for school!

Salaam A resounding, unambiguous YESS. First let me say I am a practising Sunni and have met many who follow the 4 accepted ways in Sunni tradition as well as those who follow different ways of the Shia one. It seems that political and cultural prejudice have now taken the place of pure religious considerations. To illustrate: two of my friends are now happily married, the husband Shiite, the wife Sunnite and both families I have known all my life. However the wife’es father refused to attend the wedding and disown his daughter until asked to give any purely religious reasons for his objections. Needless to say these do not exist. Knowing the position and beliefs of both groups, I’ll be happy to supply any further information if asked.

Thanks

A better way to phrase the question, because it seems you’re both from the USA:

Can a baptist marry a catholic? Yes, they both have the same book, but different interpretations.

“romeo & juliet” were families that hated each other…baptists and catholics aren’t at war, are they? Confusing the issues with the various groups in Iraq with the larger Arabic world (of which Iraq is a small part) is like saying the groups in Ireland that were at war (protestant & catholic) were representative of the whole of christendom.

anything is possible but it would be like a romeo and juliet type thing for sure
