What species of birds are you attracting? Anything "special"? My wife has all kinds of "cool" birds coming around. Blue birds, golden finches ect. Special food she buys to attract them. I put up a martin house to try and get them in here. "Bad" birds like the millions of starlings, I shoot. Just looking for some ideas to pass along to my wife because she is really enjoying her new hobby.
Our neighbors had a bird feeder in their yard right next to our driveway beside my Dad's truck. Every time he would wash it the birds would plaster it with bird crap. He asked the people nicely if they would move it either to their back yard or the other side of their house and explained why. They said that they could put anything they wanted on any spot they wanted on their own property. My Dad said that he understood that, but told them that when you live in the city you should have consideration for others when it comes to certain things, and that he shouldn't have to constantly battle bird crap on his truck, especially the windshield. Both the guy and the lady looked kind of nervous, because my Dad is big with a very intimidating voice, but all they said was "we're sorry" and went back inside their house. A few days later my Dad went out to leave in his truck & the windshield was covered in bird crap again. He was yelling really loud while cleaning it off, and said he was going to bring home a couple of cats and let them roam outside. The people came out and moved it to the other side of their house, of course they waited until after he left. lol
I have many bird feeders. The ones for humming birds, the long ones that r for multiple birds, the standard round ones, that's the ones that r hanging, then I have 4 regular stand ones. I also have standing bird feeders that I just put water in, and also 2 fountain ones for waters, I attract doves, humming birds, sparrows, black birds, cardinals, finches, bluejays, and robins, oh yeah and the occasional falcon that comes to try and get a bird or squarrel out of the yard
Awesome. Try a "finch sock". They are filled with thistle seed and you can re-fill em cheap. Golden finches are the only bird that will eat from them. They look like little parachetes (sp). Amazing how they find it. I live in the country, but one of my buddies lives right in the middle of town, he put one up and had finches overnight.
Hm lets see, bird feed attracts small animals. Small animals = squirrels. Squirrels scare the dung out of me! So... no. I don't have bird feeders in my yard. But I do have 3 loonie chickens that are like secret ninja assasins that attack people who come in our yard, and I mean... we feed them. Does that count? Kinda. Not really. Okie.
Yeah the falcons the city did something to make them b here, they did that a few yrs back. Once one flew over my mothers head and it happened so fast if I wasn't lookin we wud have wondered y we got a short breeze, cuz those wings put out some wind. Hope this all makes since
Yup my mom has plenty of them out there ;3 One feeder where only birds can get the seeds, and if the squirrel lands on the platform it won't be able too...though the squirrels out smarted us and hung on the chain and grabbed the seeds.. those sneaky little critters X3
Yes, but only humming bird feeders. My mom has been wanting to buy some sunflower seeds for other types of birds though. I love looking at birds. :) There was a shiny blue one flying around the other day. It was so beautiful!
We used to have sugar water bird feeders hangin from our tree for humming birds. We kept it for a little over mm I'd say 3 moths, but got rid of it cause it attracted so many bees.
They are precious, we had a humming bird nest in the tree, it was so small. The babies were so little. After they left the nest & never came back, we took it down & kept it :)
Oh yeah I forgot about those, I have 4 hanging from a couple of those shepard things, I forget exactly wat thr called. I also feed the squarrels nuts and corn on the cob :-)
Have a nest too that blew out of a tree onto the ground it's on top of the fridge in a canister I think. They built a new one in the same tree but different limb. Amazing.
The lots on our street are long for being in the city, 250ft. But they are narrow, only 50 ft. wide. Our back yard is fenced in, but not the front.
One of the drawbacks. Humming birds are super cool though. Hard to believe the little fellas migrate hundreds of miles south in winter.
P.S. Falcons? Really? I don't know if they are around here but am gonna look it up for sure.
Yep, they are sneaky. All about survival., I guess we would do the same thing if we had to.
I tried placing bird feeders over the front landing, but the possums kept stealing them!!!
That's no good. You can try a slick pole that the opossums and other varmints can't climb.
