Why are animals put down at old age?

I’ve never had a pet so I really know nothing about them. Why do we not just let them die on their own? Why do we put them down?

Answer #1

Cuz some of us love animals :)

Answer #2

Animals are anesthesized so that they do not have to suffer any longer then they have to.

Answer #3

because they tend to feel pain more easily and worse when they are younger, and they may have an old age disease so putting them down is the only way to stop them from feeling the pain and its easier than them dieing a slow and painful death

Answer #4

As Tait said, it’s so they don’t have to suffer. A lot of the time dogs and cats go blind and deaf and even get mental problems as they get really old. Like my old cat is fourteen this year and she has cat dementia so my Nan’s gonna let her go before it gets worse.

Answer #5

Depends on the pet, I’ve a cat put down because she was suffering and there was nothing the vet could do to help her. I would rather let her go than of kept her because I loved her. I loved her more to let her go peacefully and stop her suffering.

Answer #6

I had no idea they got that a lot :O. Is it really common?

Answer #7

Yeah our vet told us they can get a lot of diseases like that when they’re old just like humans.

Answer #8

Sometimes it’s done because the owners don’t want to suffer.
