80 foot pine tees roots

I have 11 80 foot tall pine trees and the roots are out of control. They are all over this yard making it impossible to cut grass. Can I fill in the yard with 12” topsoil and re plant grass? Some roots are 4-5” in diamiter and completely on top of the existing lawn. others are only 2-3” . I have removed a lot of pine needles and exposed even more roots. Can I cover them with dirt? Any help would be appriciated

Answer #1

call a tree specialist.

Answer #2

If you care about the trees, don’t interfere too much with the roots. Covering them with topsoil isn’t recommended - it can make the roots rot, and then the tree will receive less nourishment. You could add small amounts of soil in between the roots and plant things with shallow roots that like shade.

Answer #3

You could cut some of the roots if you would want to!
