Do you think weight is somehow linked to religion?

I just heard about this on the news. Apparently, there is something going on where people believe that weight is somehow linked to religion.

It sounds pretty out there to me, but I’d like to hear some other points of view on this.

Answer #1

That’s really an odd connection - I haven’t heard of it, myself.

The only thing I can think of that would cause that is the traditions in each religion - some traditions are pretty much centred around food, or feasting, which can affect weight.

Answer #2

I dont see the correlation. Obesity affects people of all religions.

Answer #3

Actually I can see in a way how that could be true, but NOT to do with what their religious believe is., but rather what they religion dictate that they should eat. Take for example the Hindi religion, they eat mainly vegetaria and occassionally meat (not beef and sometimes not pork) and therefore one would expect them to be healthier because being vegetarian is healthier and therefore they might be healthier than for example Christians which can eat anything….but that is my view.

Answer #4

my thoughts exactly :) now that this has been brought up, it makes sense! Also those who dont drink alchohol (lots of calories saved!) as part of their religion

Answer #5

Sure, because if you belong to a religion where everyone is a follower of some heavy dude, then you’re more likely to be heavy yourself, whereas if you you’re in an airy-faery religion that’s all about spreading the light, then you’ll probably be all light and airy.

Answer #6

I guess so. Some Religions tell people what to eat & when to eat. Religions also have fast, which where you don’t eat for a certin amount of time or you only eat one meal a day. And people that go out to church serivces ALOT can get over weight becuase their too busy with their religion they don’t pay atttion what their eatting or they don’t go work out. Their alot of over weight people at the churchs i’ve to. But that’s just my guess.

Answer #7

Weight is linked to social status. It’s about what food people can afford and about how educated they are about consumption. And religion is sometimes also linked to social status.

On the other hand, some but not all religions have food prescriptions. Like what to eat and when to. This will sure have some effect on the weight of several people.

Answer #8

“the inspired utterance says definitely that in later periods of time some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to misleading inspired utterances and teachings of demons…forbidding to marry, commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be partaken of with thanksgiving by those who have faith and accurately know the truth”(1Tim4:1-3)
