My Mom Might Be Getting Sued

When I moved out from my dad’s house (With Daniel,my bro and Cissie,my mom) we moved to an apartment. So we lived there for about 3 months, then moved back to my dad’s. While I was living there a met a girl named Jadeah. Me and Jadeah became friends. My mom overheard Jadeah’s mom’s name, and called my aunt. Jadeah’s mom,Lorie, used to live in the campground with my aunt. Lorie is a felon, who got her driver’s license, and cannot get it back. To top that off,she was a meth addict, and so was her ex husband. When we moved out,we cleaned the apartment as well as possible. The fridge, carpet,EVERYTHING!! A couple weeks later (today) my mom got a phone call from the landlord. He was very, very mean about the situation, too. He said that Lorie called him and was complaining that our house was a mess and we had cats in the house. She had a dog AND a cat,and I watched. The cat pissed in the house and the dog sh*t in the house. Our cats never, ever used the bathroom on the floor. The landlord said that fleas were in the carpet, too, and has to replace it. We have to pay about 400$ extra on our rent (Something about breaking our lease? I don’t know,I’m just a kid. I don’t comprehend this stuff…) and said that he was taking us to court. But how, exactly, can he believe a felon who has identity theft and a lot of other…crimes on her record. Seriously,I have no idea how to put all of this. I How can we prevent from getting sued?

when you sign up to live somewhere you sign a contract saying that you will live there a certain amount of time, usually a year or two. If you leave early the landlord can charge you an extra fee because you broke your contract which it sounds like your mom did.

As for everything else check and see if you have pictures in and around the apartment this way if they try and get you for leaving a mess you can show the pictures in court to show that you left it nice and clean. However if fleas are in the carpet I don’t know how they would have gotten there aside from some of your animals. You can ask for proof that fleas are there if you think you didn’t bring them in. The landlord also could have had a rule about no pets so maybe that is why he is very angry but, I don’t know what his policy was for you.
