Has your parents' professions influenced yours?

Just curious, does the professions your parents are in influence what you do (or what you want to do when you grow up)?

Are there similarities?

Me, personally, yes. My Mom is a social worker who works with children who have developmental delays, mostly autism and Down’s. I spent my childhood befriending her “kids” while she did afterschool programs with them. I spent most of high school tutoring kids with learning disabilities, and now work in the nonprofit industry, when I’m not working on FunAdvice :)

My Dad is a scholar and entrepeneuer who has started his own successful business. Not sure I want to go in the business route, but scholar, for sure. I plan on getting my PhD asap!

What about you guys? Has your parents’ professions influenced you at all?

Answer #1

No, not one bit. Both my parents have bounced around jobs and didnt go to collage. I am currently in training to become a federal prosecutor. xD

My dad was a construction worker (retired) and my mom is a secondary school teacher.I cant really say that their professions have influenced me because Im unemployed…Im still in school completing my Economics degree but Im finishing my finals now so I’ll find employment soon but it wont be as a teacher. That job is just not for me however, when I was younger I always wanted to be like my mom. I thought her job was so cool but… not any more, I guess the times have changed. What I really want to be is a business consultant/ manager. So no their professions have not influenced me :)

My mom has a little bit. She used to work in a pharmacy and I wanted to be a pharmacist for the longest time after that. Now I’m going to go to college to be a nurse. Mine and her’s personalities are exactly the same. We laugh at the same things like the same things.

my dad has done nothing to influence me what so ever.

Answer #4

If anything they’ve influenced me to get a GOOD job. Like, they do hard work. My dad swings a hammer all day long and my mom is walking all aropund the hosptial. Neither one gets paid much.

So it’s influenced my to want to go to college and get a good paying job. Until then I’m stuck working at an amusement park.

Answer #5

Nope. My dad is a welder in a factory and my mom is a part-time therapist. I think when I’m older I would like to be a dancer or nutritionist.

Answer #6

I will have to second esconsults comment- my parents work ethic is firmly implanted in me- go to work everyday, and do the best job you can- in those regards I have been very successful, even though I haven’t followed my parents into their chosen professions. I have done pretty well as a factory worker- but I am aspiring to reach higher.

Not really.

But their values in going about doing their profession really helped a lot. Hard work, a streak of independence. Entrepreneurs. Fairness. I’d say those things have shaped my professional life.

Answer #10

hey, no I’m sorry to say. My mother was mostly a stay at home who was extremely interested in her hair and her nails :-) My dad was illiterate and could not read or right. He did manage to have gainful employment mostly out of town so I never saw him. I struggled with mostly waitressing and retail until I was struck…it was like a bolt of lightning went through me and…to make this long story shorter I went back to school got my high school diploma in my 30s and then enjoyed 4 years of college. I am currently a Family support worker, detention supervisor in our biggest high school and a Education Assistant. My diploma is in Developmental Service Worker and Alcohol and drug counselling. Sue
