What are some good books that deal with life struggles through depression, self harm or some sort of mental disorder(bipolar, bulimia anorexia ect)?

I have read the book scars which was absolutely amazing and so heart wrenching but I loved it. Anything similar to that would be much apperciate.

Answer #1

Kinda along your lines of question, Firestorm. By Iris Johansen.

Answer #2

A more severe disorder than what you’ve asked about, but I remember “I Never Promised You a Rose Garden” by Joanne Greenberg (originally published under her pseudonym, Hannah Green) as a vivid and moving depiction of schizophrenia.

“Girl Interrupted” consists of essays describing the author’s two-year stay at McLean Hospital (not far from where I live) when she was a teenager diagnosed with “personality disorder.” It is written in a very straightforward style without much emotional drama, despite the real drama of some of the events it describes.

Both stories take place in the 1960s, so diagnoses, treatments, medications, and attitudes are all rather different from now.

Read ‘The child called it’. About a little boy abused in his home..I had my friend read it, she balled her head off. Idk who its by, but its really good..depressing and sad as hell..but good. If you don’t have the best stomach, I prolly wouldn’t read it. Its really heart wrenching though..Extremely. For a movie, watch ‘An American Crime.’ It has Ellen Page as the main actress. The stomach thing most definitely goes for this movie too..And only watch it if you like the depressing, ‘make you cry’, heart wrenching movies. Also, you can read a book called ‘Speak’. Pretty much, a girl gets raped at a party and calls the cops. And soo on..Not as good as the first book or anything. But its still alright. I definitely recommend reading the first book though. And the movie.
